As Valentine’s Day looms, we all begin to wonder how to best celebrate the one day in the year set aside for love and friendship…
Love is what makes the World go round, it is said and this is certainly true on Valentine’s Day when half the World is decked in red roses and satin ribbon to celebrate the traditions of affection and friendship of years and a billion cards are exchanged.
Valentine’s Day is named for Christian martyrs and Geoffrey Chaucer brought the significance of the day to the attention of the English court in the middle ages. Since then we have all busied ourselves in pursuit of suitable tokens and cards for loved ones each February 14. As we get older, we find the hunt for gifts and cards more difficult, probably because we have done it all before! However, as we age we also begin to appreciate more deeply the affection we share with other people.
On Valentine’s Day we exchange funny little gifts with many of our friends and family and sometimes we send anonymous gifts and cards to bring a smile to the face of someone we know who needs to have their spirits lifted. Getting that brightly colored card that says ‘I love You’ can boost your confidence and help you get things in perspective.
Taking the trouble to source a lasting gift can be more appropriate this year. Disposable novelty gifts bring a brief smile but they do not convey a depth of feeling. If you feel a deep affection for someone close to you, why not say it with a gift that will last forever? As so many people are facing a difficult year, it can be comforting to be given a gift that may be kept in a pocket or purse or on a desk: something that may be looked at and held and kept close as a reminder to stay positive and focused on the things that matter the most.
Meaningful and unique Valentine’s Day gifts are so much more appreciated. A romantic gift idea is the gift that may be shared – I keep this one and you have that one – it means so much and cost so little is the gift is made of natural materials. This year, try to say ‘I Love You’ with a Valentine’s Day gift that can be your Valentine’s special gift of the year.
